CCBC Essex dropped the opening game of Saturday's doubleheader to CCBC Catonsville, 7–5, despite building an early four-run lead.
The Knights responded quickly after Catonsville took a 1–0 lead in the first inning on a balk. In the bottom half, Essex surged ahead as Casey Parsons (Sophomore, Salisbury, MD) delivered a two-run double down the right field line, followed by a two-run single from Laurin Guerra Guzman (Sophomore, Santo Domingo, DR) to make it 4–1.
Essex extended its lead in the third inning when Joey Rosa (Sophomore, Carolina, PR) connected on a solo home run to left field, pushing the advantage to 5–1.
Starting pitcher Mekhi Mancuso (Freshman, Baltimore, MD) turned in a strong outing, striking out nine over 5.1 innings while allowing four runs (three earned).
Catonsville began its comeback in the sixth inning, highlighted by a three-run home run from Santiago that cut the deficit to one. The Cardinals completed the rally in the seventh inning, taking the lead on an RBI single before adding insurance with a two-run home run to center field.
Andy Martínez Rivera (Freshman, Vega Alta, PR) was charged with the loss in relief, allowing three runs (none earned) over 1.2 innings.
Offensively, Adrian Camilo (Freshman, Bronx, NY) led the Knights with two hits from the seventh spot in the lineup. Parsons and Guerra Guzman each drove in two runs to pace Essex.
Despite the result, the Knights showed early offensive production and strong pitching, and will look to bounce back in the second game of the doubleheader.
