CCBC Essex Drops High-Scoring Battle After Late Hagerstown Rally

CCBC Essex could not hold off a late surge from Hagerstown CC, falling 11-8 on Tuesday afternoon at CCBC Essex in a back-and-forth regional matchup.
 
The Knights built an early four-run advantage and finished with 13 hits on the day, but Hagerstown rallied late to complete the comeback victory.
 
Hagerstown opened the scoring in the top of the first inning after Mummert lifted a sacrifice fly to bring home a run.
 
CCBC Essex answered immediately in the bottom half of the inning, taking a 3-1 lead behind RBI singles from Connor Bailey (Soph., Salisbury, MD) and Yariel Hernandez. The Knights continued to pressure the Hawks early with aggressive baserunning and timely hitting.
 
CCBC Essex added another run in the second inning when De Jesus tagged and scored to extend the lead to 4-1.
 
The Knights maintained control for much of the afternoon before Hagerstown mounted its comeback in the seventh inning. Kim delivered a key double as the Hawks tied the game at seven.
 
Hagerstown took the lead for good in the top of the eighth inning after Mummert was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, forcing in a run.
 
Tobin followed with a clutch double that stretched the lead to 11-7.
 
CCBC Essex attempted to rally late but could not close the gap.
 
Bailey paced the Knights offensively with three RBIs while going 2-for-4 at the plate. Casey Parsons, De Jesus, Hernandez, Bailey, and Yahil Diaz each recorded two hits in the contest as CCBC Essex piled up 13 total hits. The Knights also applied pressure on the bases, stealing seven bags during the game.
 
Rommel got the start on the mound for CCBC Essex, tossing 6.1 innings while allowing six runs, five earned. Perez was charged with the loss in relief.
 
Hagerstown collected nine hits in the victory, led by Tobin's three RBIs. Illig and Miller each added two hits for the Hawks.
 
CCBC Essex will look to bounce back on Thursday when the Knights host Chesapeake College in another Region 20 matchup.
