On a Cold and Windy Day, CCBC Essex Falls to Hagerstown CC in Game 2 of the Doubleheader

Hagerstown, MD – CCBC Essex (11-11, 7-7 in Region 20 play) fell to Hagerstown CC, 7-4, on Saturday at Hagerstown Community College, as the Hawks completed the sweep of the doubleheader.

CCBC Essex was the first to get on the board in the top of the first when Sophomore Justin Cook (Bradenton, FL / Manatee) drove in the first run with an infield single.

The Knights extended their lead in the top of the third inning after Sophomore William Hartman (Reisterstown, MD / Franklin) walked, and CCBC Essex scored on a wild pitch, making it 3-0.

Hagerstown CC responded in the bottom of the fourth when Lore hit a sacrifice fly, tying the game at three.

The Hawks took the lead, 5-3, in the bottom of the fifth thanks to home runs by Fllig and Shimmel.

Freshman Drew Rommel (2-2) (Fallston, MD / Fallston) took the loss for CCBC Essex. The righty went six innings, giving up seven runs (five earned) on eight hits, striking out three and walking one. Kerns started the game for Hagerstown CC, allowing two hits and three runs (one earned) over three innings, striking out one and walking three.

Hitting seventh in the lineup, Freshman Diego Garcia (Bradenton, FL / Manatee) showed the depth of CCBC Essex's lineup, leading the team with two hits in four at-bats. The Knights displayed patience at the plate, amassing seven walks in the game. Sophomore Eduardo Zayas (Cidra, PR / Bilingual Education School at Cidra) swiped two bases, as CCBC Essex stole five bases overall.

Shimmel and Fllig were a one-two punch in Hagerstown's lineup, each driving in two runs. Lore led the Hawks with two hits in two at-bats.

CCBC Essex will return home for an eight-game homestand, starting with a Region 20 doubleheader against Cecil College Seahawks on Sunday. First pitch is at noon.
