A 1976 graduate, John "Sonny" Askew might just be the best soccer player produced by city powerhouse Patterson High School (Baltimore, Md.).
At CCBC Essex in 1976, he was a second team NJCAA All-American as a striker and also earned All-NJCAA Region XX and All-Maryland JUCO Conference first team honors.
He is one of the best professional players to come out of CCBC Essex.
Askew played 12 seasons of professional soccer with the Washington Diplomats of the North American Soccer League (NASL, 1977-1980), the Montreal Manic (NASL, 1981) and Baltimore Blast of the Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL, 1980-1981), Georgia Generals of American Soccer League (ASL, 1983), Team America (NASL, 1983), Tampa Bay Rowdies (NASL, 1984) and Washington Stars (ASL, 1987-1989).
He was a 1988 ASL All-Star and earned four United States Men's National Team appearances.
Askew was named to the 144th spot on the Baltimore Sun's top 175 athletes with Maryland ties in the spring of 2012. He was elected into the Maryland Soccer (1994) and NJCAA Soccer (2005) halls of fame.
Askew was also named an NJCAA JUCO "Athlete of the Century." He served as the Head Men's Soccer Coach at CCBC Essex for 3 seasons (1989-1991), earning NJCAA Region XX Coach of the Year honors in 1991.
